Preston Griggs Obituary

Preston Griggs was born the 13th child to Sam and Willie Mae Griggs. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized under the leadership of Rev. W.B. Brown at Bethlehem #1 Missionary Baptist Church in Shaw, Mississippi. Preston graduated from Shaw High School and later attended Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, where he studied Welding as a major. He excelled in his studies and later went on to win a championship in welding at a competition in Texas.

Preston later relocated to the Chicago, IL area and accepted a job working at Danly Machine Company, where he worked for over ten years. Later, he went on to work for Falcon Bus Co. (now known as First Student Bus Co.), where he drove students, trained drivers, participated in recruitment endeavors and worked in the shop as a mechanic. Preston loved his jobs and made many lasting friendships over the years. He also competed and won yearly awards in events such as the annual Parking Obstacles Course. He also won a few spades tournaments at the annual family reunions.

Preston was a friendly man and was truly loved by his friends and especially his family. To say that he was the life of the party would be downplaying the way that his loved ones felt about him.

Preston was preceded in death by his parents: Sam and Willie Mae Griggs. Siblings: Sam Griggs, Jr.; Louella Williams, Arthur D. Griggs, Willie Lee Griggs, Jessie Mae Webb, John B. Griggs, George Griggs, Estelle Griggs-Langham; and Rosie Lee Griggs. Preston was also preceded in death by his only daughter: Candace White-Sartain.

He is survived by his remaining siblings: Pearlie Mae Griggs-Clay, Dinah Ophelia (Robert) Clay, and Katie Griggs. His children: Pernell Ferguson, Nelson Spells, and Prentice Griggs. Grandchildren: Christian, Alexis, Zaria, and great grandson: Carter.
