Mildred “Pookie" Wortham-Williams devoted Mother, grandmother and longtime advocate for women and children passed away peacefully on June 25,2025. Born January 8, 1954, to Cleness and Mildred Wortham (who preceded her in death) in Tupelo, MS, Mildred dedicated her life to helping others, always prioritizing the well- being of her family and the communities she served.
She accepted Christ at an early age at Bethlehem Healing Temple under the leadership of Bishop Richard Poole. Later at Emmanuel Tabernacle M.B. Church under the leadership Rev. Ralph Ramey. After relocating to Portsmouth, Virginia Grove Church under the leadership of Dr. Melvin O. Marriner.
She married James Williams (also preceded in the prior year) in 1990.
She was a woman of great faith and found joy and strength in attending church. For over 30 years, Mildred worked at West Side Future dedicating herself to helping others. As a community advocate, she played a vital role in assisting women and children in accessing essential resource like housing and food. Her tireless effort brought hope and stability to countless families, and her legacy of service will not be forgotten.
Mildred found her greatest joy in her family. She was a loving mother and a PROUD grandmother, always present with a hug, listening ear, and a heart full of wisdom. Whether a family gathering, church service, or just hanging on the porch she good for a “Heyyyy Babyyy"!!!! and if anybody loved you Facebook it was her just check your messages! Her presence brought comfort, laughter, and a sense of home.
Mildred is preceded in death by her husband James Williams, parents Cleness and Mildred Wortham, two brothers Cleness “Bud" Jr. and Peter Wortham, granddaughter Tatiana Wortham.
God has called home his best angel, but she leaves a mighty legacy to cherish her memories: Children: Trenton Wortham (Sue), Shukenya Wortham-Young, Dietrick Wortham, James Williams Jr., Darell Wortham; One sister: Sheila Wortham; One brother Daymond (Lakeesha)Wortham; One Aunt: Ella Mae McIntosh. 25 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, 3 nephews: Daymond (Money Mon), Davion, Kirk; 1 niece: Deja Wrotham. All of whom brought immense joy to her life. Mildred also held a special place in her heart for her godson Zambri Ramey and goddaughter Megan Warren. Sisters in love Joyce Freeman, Brenda Stephenson, Darlene Lowe, Gloria, Clotee Fox, Janice Babbit and Chlorine Treadwell, Her Forever Family: Rockwell Gardens Family, Waller Ave Family, and Duncan Ymca.
Though she is gone her spirit leaves on in the hearts of all who loved her.
