Marlene Holmes Obituary

Marlene Holmes born February 22, 1969 in Chicago , Illinois to Mary Holmes. Originally given a life expectancy of 2 years old, Marlene Holmes beat the odds and lived 55 glorious years. Baptized at the age of 17, Marlene was a definite -woman of God. These glorious years were not spent alone because she entered this world with a twin sister, Darlene Holmes, who became one of her best friends and confidants. Marlene had a host of brothers and sisters, Bernice Holmes, Gregory Holmes, Veronica Holmes, Alphonso Holmes, Ned Williams, Lynne Holmes, Maurice Holmes, Darlene Holmes, Katrice Pates, Kelscey Pates, Katrell Holmes.

Marlene Holmes attended Austin Community High School in the 1980’s where she discovered her love for house music, fashion and cosmetology.

Marlene was a natural. She was a self taught hair stylist, make-up artist , commercial driver and hobbyist desk doodle / sketch artist. Some believe that she invented the modern day “Weave”.
Veronica Holmes, “Marlene took one of our mothers wigs, cut it up, permed it, braided her hair and then proceeded to sow the pieces in creating her own style and look - and this was in the early 80’s. I’m pretty sure she should’ve patented this technique.”

Amongst these talents her ultimate gift was touching lives, galvanizing community and contributing the “realist” most “honest” insight and wisdom to those who needed it most. Marlene’s phone line stayed ringing. The magnetization of her gift caused her to be the central point of perspective for her family and friends. Marlene’s expressiveness and natural charisma was the means of her charm and purpose in life. Marlene had the biggest, most forgiving and honest hearts in the world. She loved very hard and very unapologetically.

Her biggest treasures in life were her two children Brandon Markell Holmes and Brittany Marlette Holmes. Marlene was an extraordinary parent who raised her children with reverence for God, faith and wisdom. Marlene sacrificed many things to be the best parent she could be. She always made sure her children prayed and read scripture when they were young. In some ways, this may have been a bit too complex for children their age. Marlene read “revelations” to her children when they were just 5 and 6 years old ; clearly, Marlene didn’t falter from the truth. She made sure her children knew and understood the greatness of God and desired a relationship with him.

Brandon Holmes, “When I was younger I used to think the world was coming to an end every single day because my mom read revelations to me. I remember playing in the yard and hearing an airplane in the sky like, “ Here comes Jesus.” Cause I seriously thought the airplanes in the sky were Jesus descending from heaven.”

Marlene made sure her children never leaned on their own understanding because in the years of 1999-2000 she quizzed her two kids on these two scriptures everyday before they went to school.

1.    Proverbs 3:5-6
Marlene: Trust in the LORD with all your heart
Brandon and Brittany (Quiz) : and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

2.    Psalms 146:3
“Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing.” Or simply put : Never put your trust in man because man will deceive you.

Marlene gave her children the wealth of faith and salvation. Instilling goodness and the wisdom of God into them at a very young age.
She passed this wealth of wisdom down to her grandchildren. When Marlene would look after her grandchildren on the weekends, she made sure to teach them the Bible and all the Godly wisdom she felt they needed to get through this life.

Brittany Holmes, “ Our mom would sit Brintin and Brooklyn down and teach them the Bible. She even bought a chalkboard and chalk to guide them through the lessons. She really loved teaching.”

Marlene rededicated her life to Christ in 2013 with the Jordan Temple Baptist Church community. This was where she fell in love with ministry and spiritual gifts and the “Prayer Line”. Marlene did not play about tithing and that “Prayer Line”. She became her highest self when she was engaging with the word of God and people of God. Marlene possessed an unsurmountable, incalculable and unshakable faith in God.

She was involved in several ministries such as, Baptism, Missionary Committee and was a faithful servant to the Jordan Temple Family when needed.

She truly loved her church community and often spoke about how amazing they were and what they meant to her.

She always spoke about: Dorothy Jones, Sister Richardson,  Pastor Richardson Pastor Hill, Trish, LALA, Sister Twigg

She always spoke and raved about how much y’all meant to her.

Thank you for the LOVE.

“Psalms 113:2-3 King James Version (KJV): Blessed be the name of the LORD From this time forth and for evermore. From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same The LORD’s name is to be praised.”

Habakkuk 3:17-19 (NIV) Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, He enables me to tread on the heights.

1 Corinthians 2:9 ( NIV): “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived the things God has prepared for those who love him”
These are the best scriptures to describe Marlene’s faith. She praised God through the good and bad.

Blessed Be The Name of The Lord: Every blessing You pour out I’ll turn back to praise; When the darkness closes in, Lord Still I will say; Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your name; Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your glorious name!
