Derrick Reeves Obituary

Derrick Reeves, affectionately known as “Tuffy” and to a close few as “Scruff,” was born on March 29, 1966, to Barbara Ann Reeves (who preceded him in death) and Troy Barbara. He was born and raised on the Westside of Chicago, where he made lifelong connections and built a reputation as a joyful, talented, and unforgettable presence.

Derrick received his early education at Bryant Elementary School and later attended Farragut High School. Known for his humor, creativity, and outgoing nature, Derrick had a gift for making those around him laugh. His warm spirit and quick wit made him a beloved figure within his family, his community, and among his many friends.

Tuffy was a man of many skills. He dedicated his time to the Chicago Park District, Delta Airlines, and his most fulfilling role as a stock clerk for Forever Lady Beauty Supply. He also took pride in fixing and detailing cars, setting up sound systems, decorating homes, and cooking for his children and grandchildren. He often joked, “Don’t get mad ’cause I’m Chef Boy R D!” — a phrase that captured his playful personality and love for bringing joy to others.

He was also an active member of the Westside motorcycle community and rode with the Unpredictable Riders, a brotherhood that held a special place in his heart.

Derrick leaves to cherish his memory his wife Lakita, 3 children: Derrick Jr., Tatiana (Tyshay), and April (Rodney); 7 grandchildren: Azzuri, Amir, Derrion, Dakota, Derriona, and Karter; 4 younger siblings: Dewon, Demond, and Diedre, and he is preceded in death by his brother Deon. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law Kim, Shelley, and Whitney, and brother-in-law Cortez, his aunties Dorothy, Kim, Gwenda, and Diane, his Uncle Billy, his dear friend Bryon Williams, who faithfully called him every day and night until his passing, and his favorite cousin Tondra Kornegay.

He is further remembered by a host of special cousins, extended family members, and countless friends who were touched by his life.

Derrick “Tuffy” Reeves will be deeply missed, and his legacy of laughter, generosity, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
