Christine Gross

Mother Christine (Smith) Gross - Affectionately known as “Mua” was born on May 1, 1932 to the late Jim Smith & Larnie Atwood in Yazoo City, MS. She united in holy matrimony to Johnnie C. Gross on Aug. 11, 1948. To this union nine children were born. They later relocated to Chicago, IL in 1958.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Johnnie C. Gross, (Son) Willie “Bay-Ray” Gross, (3 Daughters) Pearly Gross, Arletha Gross & Dorris Pittman, (son-in-law) Junior Pittman & (sister-in-law) Mary Finley.

She accepted Christ at an early age and later joined Solomon Temple C.O.G.I.C in 1987 under the leadership of Elder Solomon Davis Sr. & First Lady Barbara Ann Davis. She served faithfully on the Mother’s Board until her health began to fail.

Cooking was her passion, and anyone who entered into her home was always welcome to a great meal. Very few if any left her home hungry. She truly loved her family and often got excited about “Family Fun-Filled” events! One of her favorites was our Christmas Eve Program. It made her heart happy and full of joy to see the “Family Foundation” that her and Johnnie had built on solid love. A  good time is had by all as it is always filled with love, respect, laughter, singing, dancing and of course great food.

Mua departed this life on Sept. 22, 2019 @ 9:46 pm at McNeal Hospital with family members by her side.

Lillie Bates-Gross (Larry) Children: Lenell, LaShay (6) great-gra nds. Carrie Hanner (Willie) Children: Krista (Charles), Willie Jr., David, Jermaine, (23) great-grands, (3) great-great grands. Daughter of the late Arletha Gross (Craig): Shaunte’, (2) great-grands. Gloria Jones (James) of C.C. Hills, IL. Children: Martin Jr., Jasmine, (4) great-grands. (1) Daughter-in-law Sandra Bowen-Gross (The late Willie “Bay-Ray” Gross) Children: Marquette, Johnnie (Erica), Latoya, Lavell (Etoya), (8) great-grands, (1) great-great grand. (1) Sister- Thertia Brown. (1) Brother- R.T. Bowman Sr. A special cousin Dorothy Casey of Yazoo City, MS. A host of special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends “Young and Old” including her girl “Punky”.  

We would like to give a special thanks to her neighbors of the 700 block of Leamington Ave (past and present) who showed her much love and respect for over 40 years.
