Barbara was born on May 29, 1958 to Elizabeth Barnes and Eligha Cornett. She grew up on the west side of Chicago in a home with six of her siblings; James, Kelvin, Maurice, Aaron, Lakaza and Sujuan. As the oldest daughter, Barbara leaned into all aspects of the “big-sister” role, by caring for and looking after her siblings until starting a family of her own.
Upon graduation from George Westinghouse High School, Barbara chose not to settle into one career. Instead, her multiple interests and free spirited nature led her to trying her hand in several industries. Whether it was Howard Johnson hotel hospitality or caring for patients at Hines VA Hospital, every change allowed her the opportunity to share her warm, bright smile and connect with people from all walks of life, leaving them with a lasting impression.
Barbara will be remembered for her affectionate, fun loving spirit. She was a woman of many talents and could be counted on to help when needed. She enjoyed being in the kitchen and could whip up just about anything from nothing. Many people have enjoyed her meals over the years, including her famous peach cobbler that was frequently sought after by family and friends.
Barbara passed away at her longtime home in Chicago, Illinois on September 18, 2022.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Johnson. She is survived by her parents Elizabeth Barnes and Eligha Cornett; four children Tanisha Johnson, Earnest Johnson, Ashley Johnson, Camera Johnson; five grandchildren, Tameah, Marcus Jr, Emah’j, Earnest, Eli’jae, and a host of siblings, nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins and friends.
